Bless the Broken Road

I set out on a narrow way many years ago
Hoping I would find true love along the broken road
But I got lost a time or two
Wiped my brow and kept pushing through
I couldn’t see how every sign pointed straight to you

Every long lost dream led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart they were like Northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you
(Yes He did)

Eric’s POV

I wake up to find myself wrapped around Sookie. I smile in contentment as I bury my face in her hair while placing a kiss on her shoulder. She makes a little sound of contentment but stays asleep. Not that I would expect her to wake up, we made love several times through the night before finally falling asleep around four in the morning. Placing one last kiss on her shoulder, I slip quietly from the bed; I put my discarded jeans back on before making my way downstairs. I then take our luggage upstairs so Sookie can have something to put on when she comes downstairs. Not that I would mind her traipsing through the house naked, but something tells me she wouldn’t be comfortable doing that.

After going downstairs a second time, I move towards the kitchen to prepare breakfast for us. Thankfully, everything I requested is in the refrigerator. I pull eggs, bacon, and sausage out of the refrigerator. I then take an electric skillet out of the cabinet so I can start cooking the bacon and sausage. While those are sizzling in the pan, I make a cup of coffee using the Keurig I purchased a while back. I know Sookie is a coffee junkie so I asked the housekeeper to bring two boxes of her favorite K-cups. I turn the bacon and sausage then pull more ingredients out of the refrigerator; tortillas, tomatoes, cilantro, onions, garlic, peppers, and cheese. I close the refrigerator door to find a smiling, sleepy Sookie standing barefoot in the kitchen wearing my button down shirt from yesterday. Damn, she is fucking sexy!

“Good morning Beautiful.” I lean down to brush my lips against hers before setting the items from the refrigerator on the counter. “Can I get you anything?” She shakes her head before shuffling over to the coffee maker. Using the mug I left out for her, she makes herself an extra-large cup of coffee. She drinks her coffee in silence; I know she isn’t coherent until the caffeine jolts her system awake. So, I return my focus to making our breakfast. I remove the bacon and sausage from the skillet, setting them on paper towels to drain off the excess grease. I chop the tomatoes, onions, and cilantro, making a fresh salsa to go with our breakfast.

“Can I help with anything?” Sookie wraps her arms around my waist, pressing soft kisses along my back as her hands trace patterns along my stomach.

My cock, which has been semi-erect since she appeared wearing my shirt, now springs to full attention. I grab her hands with my own, halting her teasing torture. “If you keep that up, you aren’t getting any breakfast,” I growl.

Sookie giggles before pressing one last kiss against my shoulder. “Well, we can’t have that; I’m starving.” After I let her hands go she moves to one of the stools on the opposite side of the breakfast bar. She hops up on the stool, propping her chin up in her hand. “What are you making?”

“Breakfast burritos,” I say as I get to work chopping the peppers. I drop the peppers into the skillet. While they cook, I whip up the eggs and drop them on the other side of the skillet. I work quickly and competently under Sookie’s watchful gaze, sautéing the peppers and making cheesy scrambled eggs.

“Hmmm,” she purrs while I work, “there is nothing sexier than a man who knows his way around the kitchen. Her eyes darken with passion as she moistens her lips with the tip of her tongue. I can see that her nipples have also hardened underneath my shirt.

“Behave you,” I tease her although I have lost all desire for food as another type of desire moves through my body. “After breakfast you can have your way with me,” I tease her.

“Promise?” Her eyes and face look so hopeful that I cannot deny her what she wants. I nod my head yes, earning a smile from her.

“You’re adorable,” I tell her with a smile as I move the eggs and peppers out of the skillet. I spread my arms over the food with a flourish, “Breakfast is served milady.”

I hand Sookie her plate as she comes around the breakfast bar. She leans up on her toes to brush her lips against mine. “Thank you,” she whispers before moving towards the food.

While Sookie is fixing her burrito, I pull orange juice out of the refrigerator, pouring both of us a small glass. Sookie sets her plate down at her seat before coming back to make a second cup of coffee. She sets her coffee down at her seat, while I set out forks for us. As I work on creating two burritos for myself, she pulls the hot sauce and sour cream out of the refrigerator for me; my girl knows me well. I add liberal amounts of both to my burritos before taking my seat next to Sookie.

She takes the first bite of her food and moans in appreciation. “This is really good,” she says around a mouthful of food. “Where did you learn to cook? Sam couldn’t even boil water without setting something on fire.”

I shift uncomfortably in my seat; the noises Sookie is making while eating go straight to my cock, making it impossible for me to concentrate on my food. “My mom insisted Pam and I both learn to cook. With Dad away so much, Pam and I took turns cooking dinner. It was either that or starve since she worked 12-hour shifts.” I dive back into my food, wanting to avoid the topic of my parents as much as possible.

“What did she do?”

“She was an ER doctor,” I say in a clipped voice. Maybe she’ll drop the subject if I don’t give a lot of details.

“I worked in the ER for a few months. It was either really stressful or really boring. I was happy to move out of there,” Sookie says oblivious to my rapidly souring mood.

Sookie’s POV

I don’t understand; one minute everything was fine, the next he is freezing me out with his silence and hostility. We finished our meal in silence. Eric then hopped up to clean the kitchen as if the devil himself had lit a fire under his ass. I tried to help, but I felt like I was in the way.

“I’m going to take a shower,” Eric says in a clipped voice once the kitchen is in pristine condition.

Before he can leave, I grab his hand. He raises an eyebrow at me in a silent question. Using his hand, I tug him into the living room, forcing him to sit on the couch. I settle on his lap, my knees on either side of his thighs, my backside resting against his knees. This isn’t about sex; I want to know what happened to ruin his mood. I ask him softly, “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” he says shortly, but his eyes won’t meet mine. I cup his face in my hands so he is forced to look at me. “I call bullshit,” I say bluntly. “One minute you were having a good time, the next you are sullen and can’t wait to get away from me. Did I do something wrong? How can I fix it?” I’m sincere in wanting to make him feel better. In all our time together, I’ve never see Eric like this; he’s always been open and honest with me.

Eric sighs heavily before speaking. “You didn’t do anything, Sookie. I just don’t like talking about my parents, my mom especially.” I move forward on his lap, wrapping my arms around him in a tight hug. I feel him sigh heavily again as he rests his head on my shoulder.

“You knew both my parents are dead.” I nod my head and Eric continues. “My dad was in the Army; he was a captain. He was my hero; I wanted to be just like him. I was so proud of him; I thought my dad was a superhero. He’s the reason I joined the Army. He taught me about respect, duty, and honor.” Eric’s voice is full of hero-worship and love as he talks about his father.

“He was in his final tour of duty; he was retiring when his twenty years were up. His unit had been sent to Yugoslavia during the 1990s as part of the peacekeeping force in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was killed by a landmine.” Even after all this time, Eric’s voice chokes up speaking about the death of his beloved father.

“My mom,” he says as his voice cracks, “never really could handle being an Army wife. When he would have to go away on deployment, she would freak out. She never told him about it, but it was hell on Pam and me. She would immerse herself in work, sometimes not coming home for days. When she would come home, she would drown her sorrows in a bottle. Pam and I were pretty much raised by our housekeeper, Mrs. Thomas. She’s the one that made sure we ate, wore clean clothes, and did our homework.” Eric takes a deep breath before continuing with his story. He moves out of my arms, but locks hands with mine, his thumbs rubbing across my knuckles.

“When Pop died, Mom completely lost it. She didn’t even go to the funeral because she was drunk. She should have died when Pop did; it would have been easier on Pam and I rather than watching her drink herself to death. I was a senior in high school when she finally died; Pam was a sophomore. Ironically, it was a drunk driver that killed Mom. She was driving home from the hospital when the other driver ran a red light; she was killed on impact.” Eric looks up at me with tears in his eyes. “Pam and I swore we’d never let someone affect us the way Mom was affected by Dad. We swore we’d never let someone matter to us that much because what we saw wasn’t love; it was obsession.”

Eric releases my hands so he can wipe away the tears that are falling down my face. His smile is gentle and loving as he continues. “For nearly twenty years, I’ve avoided any kind of attachment. Pam and Alcide were really the only two people I let get close to me, and I even kept them at arm’s length. But then I met you and Hunter; you both got under my skin from the moment we met. The two of you have changed my life in ways I could not imagine. I love you Sookie Stackhouse; I love Hunter too. I want you both in my life; I want to come home to you two at the end of each day. I want to teach Hunter all the things my dad taught me.” My tears start falling in earnest as Eric talks about being a father to Hunter.

“I want to be the man you turn to; it can be something as simple as killing a spider for you,” I let out a chuckle and smile as Eric continues, “or holding you when you need comfort. I want to be everything to you Sookie, because you are everything to me.”

Eric’s mouth finds mine in a tender kiss before his lips move to my cheeks to kiss my tears away. This man is perfect for me. I know the road that led us to each other hasn’t been easy; it’s been filled with a lot of pain and loss. But I am truly grateful to have this amazing man in my life, and I love him more than I ever thought it would be possible.

The rest of the weekend passed by in a blur; Eric and I spent many hours wrapped in each other’s arms talking, laughing, and making love. Eric was insatiable; I think we christened every horizontal – and several vertical – surfaces in the house. I have never been with someone like him; he is a truly selfless lover, making certain that I’m always taken care of before he allows himself to find his own pleasure. I was sorry to see our time at the beach house end; it was a truly magical time for us. But I’m excited to be going home; I miss my little man, and I’m sure Eric misses him too.

We arrive around dinner time to pick up Hunter. Lala and Jesus look exhausted and a little relieved that we are there to pick him up. I can’t help but laugh at the two of them; they had talked for a few months about adopting a child. This was good practice for them. As a way of saying thank you, I offer to buy dinner for everyone. After much discussion, we order from our favorite Chinese place. While we wait for dinner to arrive, Hunter and Eric go outside so Hunter can show Eric how hard he’s been working all weekend.

“Alright Bitch, I wants details,” Lafayette says as he plops next to me on the couch. He hands me a glass of wine as he takes a drink from his own glass while looking over the rim expectantly at me. He arches an eyebrow at me as he lowers his glass. “Well? Come on, Sook, I’s be waitin’!”

“Lala, you know a lady never kisses and tells,” I say properly before taking a small sip of my wine.

“I know; that’s why I’z askin’ you,” Lala says slyly.

“Jesus, will you please control your man?” Usually I can get Jesus to control Lafayette; sometimes Lala doesn’t know when to back off.

Jesus grins as he sits down next to me on the couch. “Sorry Sook, but I want details too. How was everything?”

I look back and forth between my two best friends, both waiting with expectant looks on their faces. “You both are bitches, you know that?”

“And you’s avoidin’ answerin’ the question,” Lala says. “It’s just us girls, you can tell us.” The two men look at me impatiently; they will not be denied their details. So I decide to start with the two most important ones.

“He said he loved me; and I said I loved him back,” I say with a smile on my face.

“Well, hooka, we’s already knowd that,” Lala says with a roll of his eyes, but a sweet smile on his face. “We wants the good stuff . . . all the dirty little details.” Lala wiggles his tongue to indicate what he wants to know, and I can’t help but laugh. Thank God I’m saved by my little man running back into the house.

Hunter regales us with the tales of his adventures with Lala and Jesus while we wait for dinner. Once dinner arrives, we all dig into our food ravenously. I offer to help Lala with the cleanup, but Hunter is fighting to keep his eyes open. They tell us to go, and Eric again carries Hunter to my car. I’ll see Jesus at work tomorrow, where I’m sure I won’t be able to get out of telling him details about my time with Eric. Eric drives us to my house in silence, Hunter’s soft snores filling the air.

At my house, Eric carries Hunter upstairs to his bedroom. I strip him of his clothes and put him in his pajamas. He doesn’t stir once; my baby takes after me when it comes to sleeping like the dead. I kiss him on the forehead, and pull his door closed. I find Eric in my bedroom; he brought my luggage in while I took care of Hunter.

“Thank you for everything,” I say as I wrap my arms around his waist.

He presses a kiss to the top of my head as he wraps his arms around me. “Oh, it was my pleasure,” he purrs against my head. I shiver as the word ‘pleasure’ evokes all kinds of images in my head. How is it possible that I still want this man so voraciously? I want to strip him of his clothes and have my way with him.

“I have to go,” Eric says pulling me from my thoughts.

I sigh with regret, “I hate that you can’t stay.” Now that I know we love each other and that we want to build a future together, it seems silly that we live apart.

“I hate it too, Lover. I’ve grown used to having you in my arms while I sleep; I shall miss it. But know that I will dream of you while I sleep, and that my thoughts will be of you while I am awake.” His words make me melt; he is surprisingly good at always knowing the right thing to say. Eric kisses me good-bye, walking quickly out of my bedroom. I hear the front door open and close followed by the sound of his Corvette coming to life. I miss him already.

  1. I’m supposed to be writing – but I found I had left your site up and had to come here . . . .

Taps fingers on table, kicks feet around – waiting restlessly for this chapter. COME ON WOMAN!

    • You oh all people know how incredibly busy and stressful this time is for me. And you are choosing NOW of all times to demand a chapter?!?!?!?!?!?! So much for you taking the high road….

What a sweet chapter! Eric’s history is sad, but hopefully he and Sookie (and Hunter) can make some happier memories for him.

Thanks for the update. Love this story!

Glad you were able to dodge all the flying objects to get this chapter out. They are adorable together.

I love the update. Eric should have stayed. I might have to get out the frying pans….

    • Because he didn’t stay? Or because there isn’t more of the story available?

      • bbrock525 says:

Both!!!!! I am behind on my reading so I read the last couple of chapters. I was really into it. Then nothing. There was teasers with the songs.
        Happy writing…

      • Lol.

The muse is busy bouncing between three active stories as well as a filthy one-shot involving some of my favorite characters. I’m a busy girl. 🙂

Sorry I was interrupted at work. Imagine that. I know…I love to tease you….I think all of you are very talented and I love your work. I am not one of those readers that DEMAND another chapter or want to berate you because it didn’t go the way I wanted. Or just because. Some people are vicious. If you don’t like the story quit reading. Ok enough of my rant….I can’t wait for the chapters in the other stories. I probably shouldn’ t even read anything until its completely done. I read until I am done with a book…very bad habit…I loose tons of sleep 🙂 Seriously keep that muse entertained and have fun!

      • I hate interruptions!!!!! I usually write on my lunch break. I usually get into a groove writing and then have to go back inside because my time is up; I hate that!

Thanks for being patient with us! It’s readers like you that make this enjoyable for me. I’ve been dealing with a reviewer on another site that is ranting every chapter of ADL. Honestly, if you don’t like the story, why are you still reading? I mean this person is on chapter 45 and hasn’t had a nice thing to say yet. Why do they still read?!?!?!?!

I’m the same way with reading; I get very obsessive with a good story.

        Have a great day!

Very nice. Sookie has a lot of wisdom. Getting Eric to talk out his sorrow and resentment just saved a lot of angst. Great chapter. BTW, you and Mags are just too cute.
